The government of Victoria in Australia has opened expressions of interest (EOI) to design and build the new rail line to Mernda in Melbourne’s northeast.
The EOI will be open for four weeks and the tender process will be conducted this year.
The rail extension will include the construction of a new station at Mernda, integrated with the proposed Mernda Town Centre, and a new station near Marymede Catholic College with extensive car parking, bike storage and bus facilities.
Construction work under the project is scheduled to begin next year and is expected to be completed in 2019, creating hundreds of jobs during the construction phase.
The government noted that Marymede was selected as the first station due to its proximity to schools and local jobs.
Under the tender process, bidders will be required to investigate and price the proposed station near Hawkstowe Parade.

"Labour extended the line to South Morang, and now we are delivering world class public transport all the way to Mernda, because we believe that is what every Victorian deserves."
The Level Crossing Removal Authority will be responsible for delivering the project, which will include five grade separations, guaranteeing no new level crossings are created by the new rail line.
The project will also include the construction of new stabling facilities for trains north of Bridge Inn Road in Mernda.
It has been reported that in April, a new bus network will be introduced to provide better public transport for locals in Mernda, Doreen, South Morang and Whittlesea.
