Union Pacific Railroad has announced an $11m investment to bolster the rail line between LaSalle, Colorado, and Cheyenne, Wyoming, US.
The company is bearing the entire funding for the project, which is scheduled to be completed by mid-December.
As part of the project, work on the railroad will involve replacement of 43,300 railroad ties, installation of 12,800t of rock ballast and renewal of the surfaces at 43 road crossings.
Union Pacific northern region public affairs vice-president Donna Kush said: "Union Pacific helps businesses connect with consumers, suppliers and markets across the nation and around the world.
"In addition to helping move our customers’ goods safely and efficiently, our investments support communities by reducing traffic congestion, facilitating industrial development and promoting economic expansion."
The Colorado and Wyoming’s transport infrastructure improvement project is one of Union Pacific’s 1,500 investments that are being carried out across its 32,000-mile network this year.
The improved and additional freight rail capacity upgrade will reduce motorist wait times at crossings, enhance train operating efficiency and safety, as well as pave the way to a cleaner environment.
One Union Pacific train is equivalent to 300 trucks on roads in US, while a single gallon of diesel fuel is enough to allow Union Pacific to transport 1t of freight to up to approximately 500 miles.
