A consortium led by French engineering and consulting group Systra has secured a €60m contract from Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) to provide general consultancy services for phase three of Cairo metro line 3.

The consortium comprises Egis Rail and two Egyptian consultancy firms ACE and EHAF. It will review detailed studies and supervise construction for line 3.

Phase three includes 15 stations and covers an area of almost 18km. It will connect the two banks of the Nile and will extend to the west from Attaba, where the line will split in two serving the north and the south. It is reported that 10km of the line 3 will be underground, while a few sections will be overground.

The 48km Cairo metro line 3 will have 39 stations, with 30 of these underground. This connects the airport with the northern part of the city. It will reach as far as Rod El-Farad in the north, and to Cairo University in the south.

"We are proud to work year after year, using our technical expertise and in-depth knowledge of the local environment to help enhance mobility services for the people of Cairo, a city that is expected to reach 23 million inhabitants by 2022.

Systra Middle-East Region director Mahmoud Dow said: "This new contract is a further development in the long history between Systra and the metro of Cairo. Since the drawing up of the Greater Cairo Transport Plan in 1970, Systra has helped in the design of all three lines, representing more than 20 contracts.

"We are proud to work year after year, using our technical expertise and in-depth knowledge of the local environment to help enhance mobility services for the people of Cairo, a city that is expected to reach 23 million inhabitants by 2022."

Having overseen all design work for line 3, Systra will now review the detailed studies and supervise work on phase three of the project.

Systra worked on the first two construction phases of line 3. It supervised phase one in February 2012, and phase two, which opened to the public in May 2014.
