Stadler Rail will be responsible to perform disassembly of the existing trains, installation of the new equipment and static commissioning of the vehicles. The Swiss locomotives manufacturer has a share of approximately SfF24m ($24.5m) in this cooperation.

"The order represents a very significant milestone for our service business."

Stadler Rail Service executive vice-president Jürg Gygax said: "The order represents a very significant milestone for our service business."

The upgraded trains will consist of a power car, four carriages, one buffet car and a control carriage. These have reached around the halfway point of their service lives.

Work under this project will be carried out at a new location in Sweden, Stadler Rail stated.

Built at the end of the 1980s, the X2000 high-speed trains offer comfort, personal space and service to passengers with the support of its wider bodies.

Meanwhile, SJ is planning to refurbish the interior of the trains in the second phase of the project. This phase will have its own separate tender.

In January, ABB secured orders worth $40m from Stadler Rail for train projects in Europe and the US.
