LTA

The Singapore Land Transit Authority (LTA) has launched its first two new Bombardier-built automated people mover (APM) vehicles into passenger service on the Bukit Panjang light rapid transit (LRT) system.

In 2012, LTA awarded a contract to Bombardier for 13 additional Innovia APM 100 vehicles to enhance the public transportation services in the Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang districts.

The first eight vehicles in the series are expected to be delivered this year, while the remaining units are due for delivery in 2015.

Once the 13 vehicles are operational, peak-hour capacity of the lines is expected to be increased by around 50%.

"The Singapore Land Transit Authority has consistently seen passenger numbers rise every year."

Bombardier Transportation systems division vice-president for Asia Pacific Benoit Cattin-Martel said: "Since services began on the Bukit Panjang LRT system, the Singapore Land Transit Authority has consistently seen passenger numbers rise every year.

"The new fleet of Innovia APM 100 vehicles will enable the LTA to run more trains in two-car configurations thereby increasing capacity and improving services for commuters, proving that this transit technology is an ideal choice for urban operators."

In addition to the delivery of trains, Bombardier is responsible for the LRT signalling and communications sub-systems upgrade, in order to improve overall system capacity and combine new platforms at the Choa Chu Kang LRT station into the system.

The Bukit Panjang LRT is a significant urban feeder system that links with rapid transit stations, bus interchanges, local recreational facilities, commercial complexes and schools.
