The Government of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia has shortlisted five organisations to tender for managing contractor of a Newcastle light-rail project.

Earlier this year, Transport for NSW asked qualified organisations to register their interest for the fixed infrastructure contract which will see the development of a service running from Wickham to Pacific Park. The new light-rail line is expected to deliver a modern and reliable transport service for the community, as well as begin revitalisation of the central business district (CBD).

The shortlisted bidders are CPB Contractors, Downer EDI Works, John Holland, Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction, and McConnell Dowell Constructors.

"The NSW Government is committed to delivering a world-class light-rail system in Newcastle and the five organisations selected have the right experience and expertise to help us do so."

NSW Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said: "The NSW Government is committed to delivering a world-class light-rail system in Newcastle and the five organisations selected have the right experience and expertise to help us do so.

"Their interest is an endorsement of our plans to revitalise Newcastle and shows the private sector understands our commitment to progressing this important project."

The shortlisted companies will now be invited to submit a response to the invitation and the fixed infrastructure contract is expected to be awarded later this year.

Upon completion, the light-rail will run east from the new Wickham transport interchange along the existing rail corridor, before moving south to connect with Hunter Street and Scott Street, terminating at Pacific Park.
