Polish train manufacturer Newag has secured a PLN300m ($80m) contract from the Malopolska province to deliver 12 Impuls class electric multiple-units (EMUs).
Under this contract, the province authorities may also exercise an option to purchase additional trains. A decision concerning this will be made within a month’s time.

The new EMUs are expected to start operations by regional passenger carrier Koleje Malopolskie on train routes in Malopolska by the end of this year.
Malopolska marshal Jacek Krupa said: "The goal of the Province of Malopolska is to increase the role of rail transportation in Malopolska.
"To encourage local residents and tourists to use this mode of transportation, we have to provide the most comfortable and high quality travelling conditions, the goal we have been pursuing persistently."

Under the deal, the first six EMUs from Newag’s Impuls family are scheduled to be delivered by the end of November, for entry into service the following month, while the remaining six are due to be delivered by February next year.

By GlobalDataThe initial six will comprise four five-car 45WE sets with seating capacity of 250 passengers, including 20 folding seats, and two four-car 31WE sets with 200 seats including 16 folding seats.
The Polish train manufacturer will also be responsible for providing maintenance for these trains.
Newag president Zbigniew Konieczek said: "We are extremely pleased to be able to finalise the signing of this contract.
"We are even happier that this year, which marks the 140th anniversary of our company, more trains with Newag’s logo will appear on train routes of Malopolska."
The trains will comply with European crashworthiness and resistance standards, which will improve the comfort of travelling for Malopolska passengers, in particular for disabled passengers and those with reduced mobility.
The air-conditioned trains will be equipped with Wi-Fi, sockets, an audio-visual passenger information system, ticket machines and a passenger counting system.
The Impuls trains, to be manufactured at the company’s Nowy Sacz plant, will be capable of travelling at a maximum speed of 160km/h.
