Mesa Extension

Valley Metro’s extended light rail route in Phoenix, Arizona, US, is scheduled to open on 22 August, with three additional miles to Mesa.

The $200m Central Mesa extension project, which was completed seven months ahead of schedule, will run along the Main Street connecting Sycamore with Mesa Drive.

Mesa mayor John Giles said: "The city and Valley Metro did a great job on this project, which is being delivered ahead of schedule and on budget."

The three-mile extension is expected to carry 5,000 daily riders and will have four stations and a park-and-ride.

Funded by the regional and federal agencies, construction on the project started in June 2012 and received a $75m US Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant in the same year.

Train testing will continue on the extension until the opening day and several other system testings will be carried out to ensure the safe start-up of service.
