The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) in the US will invest $153m to buy 54 new multi-level passenger railcars for the MARC commuter rail system.
The new cars will replace 36 ageing railcars on the MARC System, a light rail line connecting Washington DC with Baltimore.
The cars will be bought from Bombardier Transit and will help MTA expand the network’s capacity.
The US Government will fund 80% of the cost while the state of Maryland will bear the remaining cost.
Delivery of the railcars is expected to begin in Q2 2013.
