Following the incident, six fire engines were called to the scene and the station reopened at 13.30 GMT.

Station manager Norman Perry was quoted by The Guardian as saying: "There were quite a lot of flames and flashing lights as well. People were just all running out of there."

"As well as tackling the fire, firefighters ensured the station and its shops and cafés were properly ventilated so it was safe for people to come back onto the concourse as soon as possible."

UK rail infrastructure operator Network Rail said that platforms five and six in the train station would remain closed.
