Harsco’s track maintenance business Harsco Rail has secured a multi-year contract worth more than $40m from UK rail infrastructure manager Network Rail (NR) for rail grinding services.

The contract continues a longstanding contracting service from Harsco Rail that began in 2004, under which the company operates and maintains a fleet of precision rail grinders on NR’s behalf.

According to Harsco, the units reprofile railhead contours for extended rail life and smoother operation, reducing fuel consumption, operating costs and noise.

It is reported that grinding also corrects surface damage that could lead to rail fractures.

"Our success in retaining these contracts is a testament to the efforts of our staff involved in delivering a safe and reliable service."

Under the deal, the company will provide a nationwide 24/7 service, maintaining complex switch and crossing trackwork.

Harsco Rail UK managing director Mark Emmerson said: "Our success in retaining these contracts is a testament to the efforts of our staff involved in delivering a safe and reliable service, evidenced by our excellent performance statistics in these areas."

Rail grinding is one part of a range of services and equipment that Harsco Rail provides to customers across the world for the maintenance, repair and new construction of railway track.

In March, Harsco Rail had won contracts for two separate services projects on major transit railroads in the northeastern US, totalling $10m in projected revenues.

Under the first contract, a Harsco P811 track renewal system and its 24-person crew will replace 22,000 ties and eight miles of rail in the greater New York City metropolitan area.

The second deal will see Harsco new track construction (NTC) machine and its 13-person crew work in New York and Connecticut to build five miles of new continuous welded rail (CWR).

The company is also focused on providing a range of onsite services and engineered products to the global steel, energy and railway sectors.
