Nigeria's Kano State Ministry of Works, Housing & Transport has awarded a $1.85bn contract to a China Railway Construction consortium. The group comprises China Railway 18th Bureau Group and China Railway Construction Electrification Bureau Group.

The contractual scope includes construction of a 74.3km-long, four-track, light rail line in Kano State, which will carry trains travelling at 100kmph.

The project will be completed within three years, comprising two years for phase one and one year for phase two.

US-based Amtrak has appointed Alstom to design and build 28 new high-speed trains to be deployed on the US Northeast Corridor (NEC) between Boston and Washington DC.

The $2bn contract will also include provision of long-term technical support, as well as the supply of spare components and parts for maintenance of the new trains.

The first of the 28 trains will be ready in 2019, with revenue services scheduled due to start in 2021, while the rest will be in-service by the end of 2022.

The five-year agreement includes cabling of Bombardier’s rolling stock using Huber+Suhner’s RADOX EN and GKW cables. It also includes provision of connectivity solutions for the company’s future trains and metro carriages.
