Germany-based Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB Netz has commissioned a Züblin and HOCHTIEF joint venture to build a rail tunnel in Rastatt, Germany.

The €312m tunnel construction project is part of the new railway route between Karlsruhe, Germany and Basel, Switzerland.

"With this project, we will be building an important part of Deutsche Bahn’s main north-south railway route."

HOCHTIEF Infrastructure general manager Wilfried Rammler said: "With this project, we will be building an important part of Deutsche Bahn’s main north-south railway route."

The project’s main focus will be the twin-tube rail tunnel that will pass directly under Rastatt. This tunnel will be bored mechanically with a hydroshield tunnel boring machine over a length of approximately 3.8km.

Additional work under the contract covers the trough sections to the south and north, as well as a supply shaft and an operational building.

The joint venture will begin work on the project in November, which will be completed in mid-2018.
