Qatar Rail has terminated a contract with international consortium SOQ, which was responsible for building the main stations of Doha Metro.

Consolidated Contractors (CCC) is now appointed to continue with the project, to be taken over in 14 days. Qatar Rail confirmed that the decision was made to minimise delays and risks.

The SOQ consortium comprises of South Korean builder Samsung C&T, Spanish construction and civil engineering firm Obrascon Huarte Lain (OHL) and Qatar Building Company (QBC).

In May 2013, it was awarded a €1.1bn contract to build the Msheireb and Education City stations.

Quatar Rail noted that work will continue as planned and discussions are underway with subcontractors to ensure continuity.

Msheireb station will be located in Downtown Doha, while the Education City station will be connected to the proposed Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) rail network to connect students from across the region to Qatar’s higher education hub.

Recently, the company announced its tunnelling activity was around 90% complete and that the overall Doha Metro project was nearing 40% completion.
