German rail technology provider Bombardier Transportation has completed testing its EBI Gate 2000 level crossing system in Zmigród, Poland.

Manufactured in Poland and integrated with an obstacle detector, the system is expected to offer increased functionality and security for customers.

The system is being developed as part of the European Union (EU) funded railway industry partnership for integrated security of rail transport called PROTECTRAIL.

Technology firm Honeywell, which was partnered for the system testing along with Bombardier’s site in Katowice, has provided the radar scanner for the system.

"These tests have provided valuable field experience in operating the integrated system."

When integrated, the system is capable of receiving information about an obstacle on the level crossing that can be useful in alerting crossing, station or train personnel.

Bombardier Transportation Rail Control Solutions head for Poland Slawomir Nalewajka said: "These tests have provided valuable field experience in operating the integrated system. The increased functionality will further benefit the security and safety of our rail infrastructure.

"As well as contributing to this important study, which will help meet customers’ growing expectations regarding security, these tests have provided valuable field experience in operating the integrated system."

According to Bombardier, the successful testing will provide the foundation to develop a mechanism to inform the train driver about the need to brake.

PROTECTRAIL consortium has 29 firms collectively working since September 2010. It aims to integrate existing security solutions in the rail environment to meet future security challenges.

As a consortium partner, Bombardier’s Network Solutions group is responsible for the global integration efforts of the firms to improve overall passenger security.
