A consortium comprised Alstom, Siemens Rail Automation and CAF Signalling will install the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on the La Coruña-Santiago and Santiago-Vigo links in Spain’s Atlantic Corridor this month.
The consortium will carry out the Level 1 train safety and protection system work as part of a €63.2m contract awarded by Spanish railway infrastructure manager Adif.
Apart from installing the safety and traffic control system, the consortium will also maintain it for 20 years.
The ERTMS is a train command and control system adopted by the European Union (EU) to be outfitted on all new lines built in EU countries.
The objective is for signalling and communications between the track and on-board train equipment to be compatible across Europe, as well as allow railway traffic interoperability among the various EU states.
As part of the deal, Alstom will install its Atlas 100 solution, for ERTMS Level 1 between Redondela and Villagarcía de Arousa on the Vigo-Santiago high-speed section of the Atlantic Corridor.
