The overall contract is a part of the Capacity Enhancement of Mass Transit Systems in Metro Manila Project. It aims to increase the capabilities of the metro system in a bid to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution across the Metro Manila region.

Completed in 2004, the existing Manila LRT Line 2 features a 13.8km elevated stretch with 11 stations. It connects the east and west regions of Metro Manila.

Marubeni was also associated with the construction of the existing section.

The company has executed several other rail projects in the Philippines, including the modernisation of Commuter Line South Project, the Metro Manila Light Rail Transit Line 1 Capacity Expansion Project Phase 1 and Phase 2 Package B.

Last month, the Philippines awarded a design-build contract to construct the first three stations of Metro Manila subway. The contract was won by a consortium of Japanese and Filipino firms.
