The first of 22 four-car metro trains destined for Bangkok’s Green Line extension has been manufactured and is ready to be shipped to Thailand from Turkey.
In May 2016, Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company (BTSC) placed an order for 22 four-car metro trains to a consortium of Siemens and Turkish public transportation vehicle manufacturer Bozankaya.
The production of the train started last April at the Bozankaya factory in Ankara.
The train, which weighs 140 tonnes, will reach the Turkish port of Borusan-Gemlik from the factory by the end of the month and will take about six weeks to reach Bangkok. It is scheduled to arrive at the Thai port of Laem Chabang by August.
The static and dynamic commissioning of the trains will be carried out in Bangkok after its arrival. This will include test runs on the Green Line tracks in the city.
The trains will run on the current BTS (Skytrain) system, as well as its extensions and will improve the line’s daily capacity to over a million passengers.
Siemens Mobility Division CEO Sabrina Soussan said: “We have designed the train in order to maximise passenger experience and to guarantee maximum throughput on Bangkok’s Green Line. The innovative construction of the car body reduces energy consumption and increases passenger capacity by providing an optimised interior layout.
“Four doors on each side of the cars enable passengers to board and leave the train rapidly, reducing dwell times at stations and increasing system capacity. Passenger comfort is enhanced by a particularly effective high-performance air-conditioning system.”
Siemens will provide maintenance service for the trains for 16 years. The scope of the company’s contract for the Green Line extension trains includes the bogies, traction and braking systems, auxiliary systems, as well as the project management, design/engineering and commissioning of the train. Siemens will also provide a rail electrification system for the Green Line extension.
The acquisition of 22 trains is part of BTSC’s initiative to increase the number of trains for the present Green Line and its extension to the east and north.
The trains will have 112 seats, 1,460 standing capacity at crush load and a maximum speed of 80km/h.
