Swedish transport authorities have approved Bombardier’s INTERFLO 450 mainline rail control solution, a high-capacity signalling system.

The approval will enable the installation of European Rail Traffic Management (ERTMS) Level 2 technology across Sweden’s entire 11,000km mainline rail network.

It also reflects the successful operation of INTERFLO 450 technology on the Ådal and Bothnia pilot lines.

“With this final regulatory approval, our INTERFLO 450 solution is ready to play its part in the rollout of ERTMS Level 2 rail control across Sweden.”

Since operations started in 2012, both lines now run with 99.9% availability, nearly four times higher than the existing system.

Bombardier Transportation Sweden managing director Thore Sekkenes said: “Our deep Swedish roots make us even more proud to continue providing the latest digital rail technology to help Sweden keep pace with increasing passenger and freight demand.

“With this final regulatory approval, our INTERFLO 450 solution is ready to play its part in the rollout of ERTMS Level 2 rail control across Sweden, improving speeds, reliability and capacity while increasing integration with the rest of Europe.”

The ERTMS Level 2 signalling standard has been created to enable cross-border rail operations across Europe.

In addition to providing continuous radio-based, automatic train protection, the system helps to optimise the flow of trains and network interoperability, as well as reduce maintenance costs.

Bombardier’s ERTMS Level 2 solutions are currently used in 26 countries.

In Sweden, the company has already equipped more than 130 vehicles with its EBI Cab onboard system, which is compatible with ERTMS and existing signalling systems.
