Bombardier’s INNOVIA automated people mover (APM) 300 system has started operating on Shanghai Metro’s Line 8 Phase 3 project in China.

In June 2015, Shanghai Shentong Metro contracted Bombardier to deliver 44 vehicles for the APM system.

The system was developed by Bombardier’s Chinese joint venture CRRC Puzhen Bombardier Transportation Systems (PBTS).

Bombardier China president Jianwei Zhang said: “We are very excited to see our world-leading fully automatic driverless system enter revenue service in this great city. I’m confident that we will see more Bombardier APM systems in other Chinese cities in the near future.

“Our metro cars equipped with the Bombardier Mitrac propulsion on Lines one, two, seven, nine and 12 are already moving Shanghai passengers daily; and we also provide maintenance and overhaul service for these cars to ensure passengers’ safety.”

The Shanghai Metro’s Line 8 Phase 3 project, also known as the Pujiang Line, is a new 6.6km long, dual-lane elevated, driverless APM system that connects Pujiangzhen to the Line 8 interchange at the Shendu Highway Station.

The INNOVIA APM 300 system is designed to provide a safe and environmentally friendly experience to passengers.

Equipped with wide doors, the vehicles run on rubber tires to reduce noise and vibration.

The system also uses the Bombardier CITYFLO 650 CBTC system, a communications-based train control technology that can increase the frequency of operations by reducing the distance between two running vehicles.

In China, Bombardier Transportation has six joint ventures and seven wholly foreign-owned enterprises.

Together, these entities have delivered more than 3,500 high speed railway passenger cars, 580 electric locomotives and around 2,000 metro cars to various urban mass transit systems in China.
