China Railway Group wins high-speed rail project in Russia
Construction firm China Railway Group secured a CNY2.4bn ($396m) contract to build a high-speed railway (HSR) line in Russia connecting Moscow with the city of Kazan.
The company said in a statement that a consortium led by its wholly owned subsidiary China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group won the bid for the 770km-long Moscow-Kazan HSR segment.

As part of the contract, the company will be responsible to oversee completion of the construction project for the geotechnical investigation, surveying and area planning.
CN to invest C$2.7bn for rail infrastructure maintenance this year
Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is planning to invest C$2.7bn ($2.2bn) this year to bolster network safety and efficiency, as well as grow its business.
The investment will be used in rail infrastructure maintenance and improvements, as well as in new capacity, equipment and technology to raise network safety and efficiency, improve service and support future growth.

Canadian National Railway president and CEO Claude Mongeau said: "With the work season now well underway, CN is embarking on a large number of maintenance and construction projects to ensure we continue to run a safe railway and play a continuing role as a true backbone of the economy."

An Amtrak passenger train headed to New York City, US, carrying more than 200 passengers derailed in north Philadelphia, killing at least five people and injuring several more.
The Northeast Regional Train 188 included 238 passengers and five crew members.
According to an Amtrak official, the engine and all seven cars of the train went off the track near a sharp curve in a section of the corridor known as Frankford Junction.
UK’s Network Rail to improve key lines on Scotland’s railway
UK rail infrastructure operator Network Rail is set to provide more than £12m of improvements on key lines on Scotland’s railway during this month.
The railway will see the replacement of track and renewal, as well as bridge refurbishments on the cross-border West Coast Mainline and also other lines linking Lanarkshire and Glasgow.
As part of this project, Network Rail engineers will demolish the existing life-expired road-over-rail bridge on Old Mill Road to replace it with a new structure.
Victorian government to invest A$2bn in new trains and trams
Australia’s Victorian Government unveiled plans to invest A$2bn ($1.5bn) for 83 new trams and trains across the state’s metro, regional trains and tram network.
The ten-year rolling stock strategy will include 100 new metropolitan trains, 100 new trams and expansion of the state’s regional train fleet.
As part of the investment, A$1.3bn will be spent to buy 37 new high-capacity metro trains, A$274m for 20 E-Class Trams, A$257m for 21 VLocity Carriages and A$90m for five new X’Trapolis Trains.
Hong Kong’s MTR to invest more than $902m to upgrade train fleet
Hong Kong metro operator MTR Corporation plans to invest HK$7bn ($902m) to buy 78 new trains with advanced operating systems and equipment.
The new eight-car trains will serve the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, Island and Tseung Kwan O lines as part of its long-term asset renewal strategy to sustain high-quality railway services for passengers.
According to the company, tenders to replace the existing train sets have been returned and the assessment process is ongoing.
Sindh to launch $1.2bn Karachi Light Rail project
Pakistan’s Government of Sindh announced plans to implement a $1.2bn Karachi Light Rail and Brown Line project.
The government and the Chinese company Sinosure have formed a committee with an aim to initiate the proposed project by October and to complete it by 2018.
According to representatives from Sinosure, the project would start from Singer roundabout via Korangi, Shah Faisal, Rashid Minhas Road and it will have a terminal station at Anda Mor at the north side of Nagan Chowrangi overpass.
Moscow and Beijing metros partner to offer better metro services
Moscow and Beijing metros signed an agreement on cooperation and partnership to improve the quality of passenger service in the regions.
The agreement was signed by Moscow Metro head Dmitry Pegov and Beijing Transport Authority vice-president Chen Xilin at the 80th anniversary of Moscow Metro.
The deal, which aims to provide joint technical studies and experience and information sharing, will cover areas such as operational safety, equipment and facility maintenance, energy-efficiency and business management.
France’s SNCF gets European Commission approval to take over Eurostar
The European Commission (EC) granted approval for French rail operator SNCF Mobilites to take full control of cross-channel train company, Eurostar International.
SNCF agreed to share ticket offices and maintenance services with new competitors.
EC’s decision is conditional on compliance with commitments designed to facilitate the entry of new rail operators onto the London-Brussels and London-Paris routes.
Sydney Trains tests new vapour-sensing system to catch graffiti vandals
Australia’s Sydney Trains began tests of a new graffiti-fighting weapon, a vapour-sensing system that automatically detects spray paint or marker pens on carriage surfaces.
Known as Mousetrap device, the electronic chemical sensor was fitted on an undisclosed number of Sydney trains to help catch offenders in the act.
The device equipped on the trains detects the smell of spray and then immediately alerts train guards, and so far the vapour-sensing system led to the arrest of more than 30 offenders.
