Alstom receives €800m order from NS for Delivery of Intercity trains

Alstom has secured a €800m contract to deliver 79 Intercity New Generation trains to Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), the national railway operator in the Netherlands.

With expected delivery from January 2020, the trains will operate on the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Breda line and the Den Haag-Eindhoven corridor.

Alstom's Europe senior vice-president Andreas Knitter said: “We are pleased to be entrusted by NS for the supply of a highly reliable, energy efficient, safe, and comfortable transport system for their passengers.

GE produces its 1,000th Evolution Series Tier 4 model locomotive

Marking a milestone in productivity, GE Manufacturing Solutions has produced its 1,000th locomotive at its facility in Fort Worth in less than four years of operation.

GE Transportation's vice-president Richard Simpson said: "This milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team here in Fort Worth.

Stadler to supply 27 EMUs worth $292m to Rhaetian Railway

Stadler has won a CHF285m ($292m) contract from Rhaetian Railway (RhB) to deliver 27 new self-powered electric multiple-unit (EMU), with provision for supply of up to a futher 20.

With the first scheduled to commence service in 2019, 76-44m EMUs will be developed at Stadler's Altenrhein plant in Switzerland,

As the first self-powered trains, they will mainly serve Prättigau and Engadin, as two-carriage units in Prättigau and as individual units from Klosters Platz to St. Moritz and Davos.

Dubai’s RTA awards $2.8bn contract to Expolink Consortium for Route 2020

Alstom-led Expolink Consortium has secured a AED10.6bn ($2.8bn) contract from Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for the 15km extension of the Red Line of the Dubai Metro.

The consortium also comprises Spanish firm Acciona and Turkish construction company Gulermak.

Work will include line extensions from Nakheel Harbour and Tower to the Expo 2020's location.

Jacobs wins technical advisor contract for $1.5bn Forrestfield Airport Rail Link project

Jacobs Engineering Group has been appointed as client-side technical advisor to the Western Australia Public Transport Authority (PTA) for the A$2bn ($1.5bn) Forrestfield Airport Rail Link.

As part of the project, 8.5km of rail will be cnstructed running underground in twin bored tunnels.

It will connect to an existing above-ground passenger rail line linking to Perth airport. It will also connect the eastern foothill suburbs to the rail network, with new below and above-ground stations.

New Class 800 Intercity Express train tested on Great Western Main Line, UK

A new Hitachi Rail-built Class 800 Intercity Express train has been successfully tested for the first time on the Great Western Railway in the UK.

Managed by Network Rail, the trials saw the new electric train make two test runs at speeds of up to 125mph on the line between Reading and Didcot. This helped validate its overhead electric power system.

The route between Reading and Didcot was first electrified to serve as a testing ground for power systems and trains.

Thales and Engie win €225m rail systems contract for Senegalese rail line

Thales and Engie have received a contract worth €225m from the Senegalese Agency for investment promotion and public works under the office of President of Senegal (APIX) to build rail systems and infrastructure for Train Express Régional (TER).

The 55km link is being built as part of the Senegalese government's Emerging Senegal restructuring plan, which was launched in 2014 to promote the country’s social and economic development.

It will be built in two phases. The first will include construction of 36km Dakar to Diamniadio line, while the 19km Diamniadio to Blaise Diagne International Airport link will be built in Phase II.

Atkins and CH2M team wins contract for UK’s Crossrail II project

A team from British company Atkins and US-based engineering services provider CH2M has secured a contract from the UK’s rail transport company Network Rail to deliver stage one On-Networks Systems programme for its Crossrail II project.

The project is a new rail route proposed to serve London and South East England.

Atkins Transportation's managing director Philip Hoare said: “It is a real honour to be working in collaboration with Network Rail and CH2M on the development of this programme.

“Crossrail II could play a major part in creating the extra capacity needed on London's transport network and promoting wider regional economic growth for London and the South East.”

Temasek offers $1.89bn to acquire Singapore's SMRT

Temasek's subsidiary Belford Investments has reached an agreement to acquire Singapore's public transport operator SMRT Corporation.

Belford will pay $S1.68 ($1.24) per share in a transaction valuing SMRT at $S2.57bn ($1.89bn). Upon completion of the acquisition, SMRT will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek.

This will allow it to focus on its primary role of delivering safe and high-quality rail service without the short-term pressures involved of being a listed company. However, SMRT will need further investments to fulfil its role as a public transport operator.

Work on $1.1bn rail line ready to begin in Victoria, Australia

The Government of Victoria in Australia is ready to begin major works on a new $1.6bn ($1.1bn) Caulfield-to-Dandenong rail project in August this year.

The project aims to remove level crossings between Dandenong and the city.

Preparations are also set to commence for the installatrion of two 230t gantry cranes near Murrumbeena Station, which will aid installment of the 2,500 locally-manufactured line segments.
