Siemens and Bane Nor launch signalling simulation centre in Norway

Siemens Mobility and Bane NOR inaugurated their testing, training and signalling simulation centre to help the digitalisation of the Norwegian rail line.

The centre, named Campus Nyland, will equip employees to work with the digital European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

The ERTMS is designed to lower operating costs, boost capacity on the rail line and increase safety.

Extended Railway Board approves $2.26bn Bengaluru Suburban Project

The Extended Board of Railways (EBR) approved the Rs159.9bn ($2.26bn) Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project in the Indian state of Karnataka.

The additional details of the project, such as clearances and cost break-up, have not been revealed.

Union Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi said: “In order to fast track the Bengaluru Suburban Rail, the Extended Railway Board met today and has given its clearance.”

Skanska secures $778m light rail extension contract

Sound Transit awarded Swedish company Skanska a $778m contract to construct the Lynnwood Link Extension L300 Main Package in Washington, US.

Sound Transit is a US public transit agency serving the Seattle metropolitan area.

The project is situated in Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood in Washington.

According to the contract, Skanska will be responsible for the construction of a guideway from Shoreline to Lynnwood, which will span more than 6km (3.8miles).

Crossrail suffers new delay to 2021 and rise in costs to £18bn

Londoners will have to wait until 2021 for the opening of Crossrail, a project that is now estimated to cost more than £18bn – up £2.35bn compared to the original £15.9bn budget – Transport for London (TfL) recently revealed.

In a statement announcing the delay, TfL said that more time is required to develop signalling software and to get safety approvals for the railway, hence the need to postpone the opening.

Crossrail, designed to connect Heathrow airport and Canary Wharf from east to west across London, is the UK’s biggest infrastructure project in decades and was originally due to open in December 2018.

Deutsche Bahn to invest €1bn in 30 high-speed trains

German railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) announced plans to invest €1bn in purchasing 30 high-speed trains to expand its long-distance fleet.

The company ordered 137 ICE 4, 23 ECx and 17 KISS trains for the coming years.

This decision was approved by the company’s supervisory board and comes barely a month after DB unveiled plans to introduce more international services.

Stadler to deliver hydrogen-powered train to SBCTA

Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler secured a contract from San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to deliver a hydrogen-powered train, which will be the first in the US.

Stadler will supply one FLIRT H2 type train with a provision for an additional order of another four trains.

The two-car FLIRT H2 features power packs between the cars, which contain fuel cells and hydrogen tanks.

Siemens Mobility to supply Vectron Dual Mode trains to Railsystems RP

Siemens Mobility received an order for two Vectron Dual Mode locomotives from German railroad company Railsystems RP.

Railsystems is the first client to purchase the new trains, which were unveiled last year at InnoTrans 2018 in Berlin, Germany.

Vectron Dual Mode locomotives can be powered by electricity on electrified routes and then switch to diesel mode on non-electrified sections of track. This removes the need to change vehicles for different tracks. They can generate 2,000kW of rating at the wheel rim, regardless of which operating mode they are using.

LTA awards $543m contract for Tengah depot

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore awarded a S$739.5m ($543m) contract to the China Railway 11 Bureau Group for the design and construction of the Tengah depot.

The Tengah depot will be an integrated rail and bus depot that includes ancillary buildings and a dormitory for transport staff. The depot will be located at a 44.5ha site near Tengah New Town.

It will be the tenth mass rapid transit (MRT) depot in the country. The depot will be used for the maintenance of 100 four-car trains and 600 buses and have other associated maintenance facilities. It will also have a dormitory for transport workers, which will be a four-storey facility with a capacity to house 450 bus captains.

Qatar Rail opens Doha Metro Gold Line preview service

Qatar Rail opened the preview service for the Doha Metro’s Gold Line that runs from Ras Bu Abboud in the east to Al Aziziyah in the west.

The preview service includes 11 stations and trains operating every five minutes with the same operating hours as the Doha Metro’s Red Line.

InterCity West Coast rail franchise renamed Avanti West Coast

FirstGroup and Trenitalia named the InterCity West Coast rail franchise, UK, Avanti West Coast.

The two companies are scheduled to take over the operations of the InterCity West Coast rail from 8 December. Avanti means ‘forward’ in Italian and the operators have said that their aim is to deliver a railway service that is ‘ready for today and fit for the future’.

The rail service will connect London to towns in England, North Wales and Scotland.
