The UTX-3115 fanless & wide-temp embedded box.

Advantech has announced the release of the UTX-3115 fanless and wide-temp embedded box, a new, comprehensive internet of things (IoT) solution that is coupled with the Intel® Gateway Solutions. It will be available for order in the second quarter of 2014.

It features a pre-integrated software and hardware platform containing a Linux operating system, security and management features. It simplifies customer deployment of IoT products and allows secure data aggregation, filtering and analysis from edge devices to the cloud through WiFi and/or 4G technologies.

Advantech embedded computing group vice-president Miller Chang said: "Advantech understands customers require readily available solutions to tackle the complexity of IoT infrastructure.

"That’s why we’ve worked with Intel to develop the new UTX or Ultra Thin ITX form-factor system, integrated with the Intel® Gateway Solutions for IoT as an ideal gateway product.

"This joint effort is a demonstration of Advantech’s capability in offering a full lineup of IoT-centred products, from wireless sensor networks and gateways, to intelligent systems and IoT software."

Intel IoT solutions group general manager Kumar Balasubramanian said: "Intel and Advantech have been working together to accelerate the development and deployment of the internet of things, which in turn helps drive business transformation.

"The UTX-3115 embedded box is an excellent showcase of our joint efforts. It is a gateway product that connects legacy systems and provides seamless communication between devices and the cloud."

Measuring only 4.6in x 5.6in x 1.4in, the UTX-3115 is a mini-size system that supports a wide range of operating temperatures from 20°C to 60°C and rich I/O expansion.

Designed for IoT applications

The UTX-3115 is designed for IoT applications, such as factory automation, smart buildings and logistics and environmental monitoring, among others. It offers one serial port, which can be connected to sensors or control devices for data aggregation, dual gigabit LAN ports, one USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports. In addition, it comes with one half-size mini PCIe slot and one full-size mini PCIe slot that support Wi-Fi and 3G and 4G proprietary WWAN networks, and one RS232/RS485 port for data communication.

Running on the UTX-3115 is the pre-integrated Intel Gateway Solutions for IoT, which brings together Wind River IDP 2.0 technology, McAfee security functionality and a wide variety of connectivity protocols, developer tools and programming environments. This brings the benefits of IoT to legacy infrastructures with local-device management and data sharing through a system of systems approach.

Customers using embedded systems can enjoy the benefits of not needing to replace existing infrastructure equipment and devices, being able to securely aggregate, share and filter data from the edge to the cloud, and can focus on adding new value-added services.

The UTX-3115 has a built in Intel Atom™ E3800 processor with low-power consumption and high-performance delivery, and supports two gigabit Ethernet and two mini PCIe cards for WiFi and a 3G/4G module.
