India-based Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has opened the first section of Delhi’s new metro Line 9.

Known as Grey Line, it is equipped with driverless Bombardier’s CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) solution.

The 4.2km-long line connects Dwarka to Najafgarh in the western part of Delhi, India. It is expected to reduce congestion and travel times for commuters in the region.

Delhi Metro Rolling Stock and Signalling director SS Joshi said: “The opening of Line 9 is another major milestone in the expansion of Delhi’s metro system which is significantly improving travel for commuters.

“I would like to thank the Bombardier team for their hard work and dedication in enabling us to successfully commission this latest line on the network.”

Last year, CITYFLO 650 CBTC solution began operating on Delhi’s Line 7, also known as Pink Line. This 58.5km-long line serves more than 200,000 passengers daily.

Bombardier was selected as DMRC’s signalling solution supplier.

The company’s CITYFLO 350 signalling solution is equipped on Lines 5 and 6. It is also under contract to deliver 40 Movia metro cars to Delhi’s Metro.

Bombardier Transportation head of rail control solutions India Rasmi Ranjan Ray said: “Bombardier and Delhi Metro have been working together since 2007 to provide signalling and control systems on the network.

“It is a proud moment to see the second fully automated line equipped with our CITYFLO 650 rail control improving passenger experience in Delhi. We look forward to continuing to equip more lines with our advanced signalling to ensure safe and reliable travel for all.”
