These trains will be part of the 2019 framework agreement, which has been signed with STA, for the delivery of up to 32 new trains. The agreement also includes provision for maintenance services for up to 30 years.

The trains will offer Italian-Austrian cross-border services and will operate in South Tyrol.

Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen Mobility and Infrastructures vice-president and regional minister Daniel Alfreider said: “The purchase of new trains is a very important step in our plan for long-term sustainable and high-quality alpine mobility for the entire European region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino.

“For us, the transfer of passengers from road to rail is especially important for local public transport in the area, but also for the international connections on the Brenner corridor.

“New trains not only ensure increasingly efficient rail mobility, they are also important for providing a quality service for our citizens and our guests. The connection with the new trains from Venosta to Trento and Innsbruck and Lienz is a concrete sign of international cooperation. Also, I am very happy with this new collaboration with Bombardier, which will be very fruitful.”

The TALENT 3 trains can travel up to 160km/h and accommodate up to 300 passengers.

They will feature propulsions, signalling and European train control systems, as well as advanced passenger information and air-conditioning.
