Kiewit-Parsons joint venture (JV) has secured the main design-build contract for the Foothill Gold Line light rail extension in California, the US.

The base scope of the contract, awarded by the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority, is valued at $805.6m and involves building a nine-mile rail line segment from Glendora to Pomona.

Scope of works includes relocating the existing freight track, installing the light rail track system and building four light rail stations at Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne and Pomona.

Additionally, Kiewit-Parsons JV will carry out improvement works at 40 grade crossings, as well as other associated works.

The contract also includes a two-year option to complete the full 12.3-mile extension to Montclair. If exercised, the contract value will increase to $1.19bn.

It will only be exercised if the authority secures additional funds by September 2021. The full project will add two stations to the line at Claremont and Montclair.

Kiewit and Parsons were also associated with the construction of the first two segments of the Foothill Gold Line project.

The first segment, stretching from Union Station to Pasadena, was completed in 2003. The second segment between Pasadena to Azusa was completed in 2015.

Kiewit Infrastructure West area manager Steve McFadden said: “Kiewit and Parsons both enjoy a long-time relationship with the construction authority, having both worked with the agency since 1999 when we began design on Phase 1 from Union Station to Pasadena.

“It is an honour to be chosen to continue that work east and to have a chance to work again with the hard-working and dedicated team at the construction authority.”

Major works for the latest extension will begin next year and it is expected to take five years to complete to Pomona. It would take eight years to extend to Montclair, if contract-option is exercised.

The Foothill Gold Line is one of the Los Angeles Metro’s 28 priority projects to be completed before the 2028 Olympic Games in the city.
