Škoda Vagonka, a member of the Škoda Transportation group, has secured a €240m ($267.7m) contract to deliver 32 single-deck trains to the Latvian passenger rail operator Pasažieru Vilciens.

The contract, which was awarded through a competitive tender process, also includes maintenance of the fleet, spare parts supply and training.

Škoda Vagonka will supply dual system trains that will enable the Latvian rail operator to operate the vehicles across the entire network, including electrified lines.

Škoda Vagonka chairman Martin Bednarz said: “We are very pleased that Škoda Vagonka was announced the winner of this important contract that it signed with Pasažieru Vilciens.

“It was demonstrated once more that our company has offered the economically and technically best solution for new modern trains.

“Our units are already operating in the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Ukraine and Slovakia, and now passengers in Latvia can also look forward to them.”

Capable of running at a maximum speed of 160km/h, the trains will be designed for suburban operations.

They will run on lines with a 1,520mm gauge and supply voltage of 3kV. However, they will be designed to enable future conversion to 25kV.

Each of these vehicles will be able to accommodate 400 seated passengers and up to 450 standing passengers. They are expected to be delivered gradually in 2022-2023.
