The Government of South Australia has placed a contract variation for 12 three-car A-City electric multiple unit (EMU) trains with Bombardier Transportation.
The latest order will increase the A-City EMU fleet to a total of 34 trains, bolstering the capacity of Adelaide’s suburban network.

Bombardier has been supplying diesel multiple units (DMUs) to Adelaide’s suburban network from 2005.
The rolling stock manufacturer began supplying Adelaide A-City EMUs in 2011 from its Dandenong facility in Victoria.
Bombardier Transportation South East Asia and Australia Region president Wendy McMillan said: “Since 2005, Bombardier has been supporting Adelaide’s mobility needs with its diesel and electric commuter trains and this contract variation is another huge endorsement of our workforce and the quality of the products designed, built and maintained here in Australia.”
The three-car EMU trains to be delivered under the latest contract will operate on the Seaford and Gawler Lines. Each of these units can accommodate 240 seated passengers and up to 300 standees.

These trains have generated more than 200 local jobs as they utilise around 60% local content in production.
Bombardier has more than 1,000 employees in Australia, including separate industrial design, engineering, manufacturing, maintenance and rail signalling teams.
Recently, the company’s joint venture (JV) with Downer EDI delivered the final B-Series EMU train for Western Australia’s Public Transport Authority (PTA).
Overall, the JV supplied 30 vehicles, which will be operated by Transperth, the public transport system serving Perth, the capital of Western Australia.
