Amtrak Corporate Planning vice-president Byron Comati said: “Nearly half of Amtrak’s annual ridership is comprised of trips along the Northeast Corridor and adjoining corridors, and this new state-of-the-art equipment will provide customers with an enjoyable and efficient travel experience.”

The base order involves the replacement of 75 trainsets or their railcar equivalents.

The Amfleet I railcar fleet has been operating for more than 40 years, while the ex-Metroliner components have been in service for nearly 50 years.

Replacement of the old fleet is part of Amtrak’s plan to upgrade and enhance services. The plan includes procuring new rolling stock and modernising railway infrastructure.
