The City of Rochelle in Illinois, US, has begun construction works for the extension of the City of Rochelle Railroad.

Valued at $7m, the scope of the project involves a 3.5 mile extension of the current rail system and the development of a four-track rail bridge and double-track transloading rail yard.

The City of Rochelle economic development director Jason Anderson said: “There is no greater sense of accomplishment than when you see people come together to reach a common goal.

“Today we are creating something that will be a catalyst for industrial development in Rochelle for many years to come.”

“We are very fortunate to have partners like the EDA and IDOT to advance the infrastructure we need to continue growing our industrial base.”

The City of Rochelle Railroad extension scheme is being funded by the Economic Development Administration (EDA), the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the City of Rochelle.

The EDA, which is a part of the US Department of Commerce, provided $3.42m for the project, while the IDOT offered a funding of $2.58m and the City of Rochelle contributed $1m.

The project comprises three separate contracts, which will be carried out simultaneously from August 2018.

While the four-track rail bridge over John’s Creek will be built by Martin Excavating, the three-track rail extension will be constructed by William Charles.

RailWorks area manager Tom Jorczak will be responsible for overseeing the construction of the double track Transloading Yard.
