Union Pacific Railroad is to spend $450m to help improve the safety, operating efficiency and customer service of transport infrastructure in Texas, US.

A total of $320m has been allocated to maintain railroad tracks and $94m for bridge maintenance in the state.

The company will spend $17m to upgrade the rail line between Ranger and Sweetwater. The scope of work includes replacement of 115,469 railroad ties and installation of 54,273t of rock ballast.

An additional $14m will be invested in the rail line between Raymondville and Robstown to replace 116,091 railroad ties and install 72,346t of rock ballast.

The investment will have further environmental benefits, as a single Union Pacific train has the freight capacity of 300 trucks, and can move a tonne of freight 452 miles on a single gallon of diesel. Each train’s carbon footprint is 75% smaller than those of trucks.

The $450m programme forms part of the company’s ongoing investment strategy in Texas. The company has invested more than $2.3bn to bolster Texas’s transportation infrastructure in the last five years.

Union Pacific has planned to invest a total of $3.3bn across its network this year.

In January this year, the company started the construction of its Brazos Yard located in Robertson County, Texas. This $550m rail yard will have the capacity to switch up to 1,300 rail cars daily.

The principal operating company of Union Pacific, Union Pacific Railroad connects 23 US states by rail, providing a critical link in the global supply chain.
