Siemens intends to collaborate with Ballard Power Systems and RWTH Aachen University to develop a fuel cell drive system for the Siemens Mireo train platform.

The German Federal Ministry of Transportation and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has invested a total of €12m ($14.63m) in the project.

The investment forms part of BMVI’s National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Program, which aims to develop new fuel cell drive technology that offers longer lifecycles, enhanced power density and greater efficiency.

BMVI currently expects the emission-free and eco-friendly technology to be ready for integration on-board trains by 2021.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has awarded a contract to VolkerRail for the second phase of replacement works along the Sheffield Supertram network.

The works are scheduled to begin in April 2018 and will include the replacement of a 11.5km-long stretch of track in order to improve line speed across the tram network.

The replacement works are slated to be carried out between May and September every year through to 2021.

Phase one of the track replacement initiative was previously completed by VolkerRail between 2013 and 2015.

HS2 and Network Rail have chosen Australia-based construction and property services firm Lendlease to be the master development partner (MDP) for the redevelopment of Euston station in London.

Lendlease will head the planning and development of the station refurbishment under the deal.

The company is expected to co-ordinate with the Greater London Authority and London Borough of Camden tom devise a master plan for the project development.

The proposed redevelopment is scheduled to begin in 2019 and will increase the amount of seating available for passengers.

It will also include the renovation of the wider station area.

The project is expected to enhance accessibility and create new job opportunities in the region.
