Italian national train operator Trenitalia has placed a new order for 27 additional Coradia Meridian ‘Jazz’ regional trains from Alstom for a sum of €170m.

The latest order is exercised as part of an option included in the initial contract that was originally signed between the two parties in 2012.

Alstom is expected to begin the delivery of the new vehicles from the mid-2018, with final delivery slated for 2019.

The new vehicles are 95% recyclable and can operate at a maximum speed of 160km/h.

Coradia Meridian ‘Jazz’ locomotives feature spacious interior fittings and each unit will be equipped with a video surveillance system, info point for passenger information, sound system and braille writing for visually impaired customers, as well as power outlets for charging mobile phones and laptops.

All of the newly contracted vehicles are set to be designed and manufactured by Alstom in Italy.

The majority of the manufacturing such as project development and certification is to be performed at the company’s Savigliano site in Cuneo, while the traction systems and auxiliary switchers will be developed at the Sesto San Giovanni plant near Milan.

Alstom’s Bologna site is expected to deliver the trainborne signalling systems.
