European manufacturer Škoda Transportation’s first prototype of low-floor tram ‘ForCity’ has entered into service in China.

The prototype was delivered as part of a ten-year agreement signed with China-based CSR Sifang Quingdao for technologies to be used in the production of low-floor trams during June 2013.

Škoda Transportation chairman Tomáš Krsek said: "The prototype of the tram ForCity in China was successfully activated and tested in the middle of January and trial runs were made in the production plant with the participance of our technicians.

"We can now announce that the tram manufactured in China is prepared for presentation to potential clients. It is a proof that the cooperation between our two companies has been a success."

The ForCity tram has an individual drive for all wheels and unique rotating chassis. Škoda trams will be used in Prague and Riga.

Škoda has trained over 150 Chinese professionals on some of the key areas of the production of a tram during 2013, with further plans to continue this year.
