Bombardier Transportation South Africa has signed an agreement with Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) for the supply of electric locomotives.

The contract will come into effect by end of March, following certain administrative approvals.

Bombardier will supply 240 TRAXX Africa locomotives which forms part of a complete fleet renewal programme involving four different suppliers.

CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive will supply 359 electric locomotives, GE Transportation 233 diesel locomotives, and CNR Rolling Stock 232.

Designed to run at a speed of around 100 kmph, TRAXX Africa will be used by TFR as dual-voltage electric locomotives for its general freight business in South Africa.

The locomotives are known for high reliability, excellent traction capabilities, energy efficiency and low maintenance cost.

The design of TRAXX Africa draws benefits from the TRAXX dual voltage locomotives, which have been in operation with several European rail freight and passenger operators.

Bombardier will build all its new locomotives in South Africa and aims to localise over 60% of the contract scope.

The company will leverage investments in local manufacturing capacity, enable training and further improving the skills of local employees, while working with local partners to achieve the same objectives.

The project is in line with the country’s black economic empowerment programme and is expected to create jobs.

Bombardier Africa Alliance is also delivering Bombardier Interflo 200 rail control solution for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa.
