The Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has announced that the UK Government will provide approximately £350m in funding for the region’s transport network over the next five years.

A total of £44.4m will be invested in the Metrolink Service Improvement Package, which will add 12 additional trams on the Metrolink network.

It will also fund the installation of a new wheel lathe on the Trafford depot, two substations in the Brooklands and Whitefield areas, as well as a turnback at Sale to improve resilience of the network.

"This major funding agreement will allow us to continue the evolution of that process and take it to the next level."

The funding is a part of the government’s long-term Growth Deal package with Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

TfGM chief executive Jon Lamonte said: "TfGM and GMCA have long recognised the strong connection between an efficient, effective transport network and sustained economic growth.

"This major funding agreement will allow us to continue the evolution of that process and take it to the next level."

A part of the funding will be used to improve passenger facilities and build three more platforms at the Salford Central rail station, in order to cater to the increased demand.

Additional platforms at the station will allow it to handle double the number of trains, as well as improve access to commercial districts of Manchester and Salford.
