Brookville Equipment has delivered the first of two off-wire capable Liberty Modern Streetcars for Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) in the US.

This new 66.5ft-long and 8ft-wide liberty modern streetcar will be operated on the four-stop, 1.6-mile track that provides access for citizens of Dallas’ urban core to the downtown Union Station hub.

The downtown Union Station hub connects to DART’s Red/Blue/Green light rail lines and the Trinity Railway Express with service to Fort Worth.

Brookville president Marion Van Fosson said: "The shipment of the first Liberty Modern Streetcar marks a major achievement in the 97-year history of Brookville Equipment Corporation.

The car’s four traction motors will be powered by an innovative battery energy storage system (ESS).

With the support of ESS, the streetcars will be able to travel around one mile of the 1.6-mile line without the aid of an overhead catenary system (OCS) while crossing the Houston Street Viaduct.

The new vehicle, which features three passenger compartments, will offer accessible seating for passengers and automatic levelling system that allows efficient and easy level boarding at station stops.

The second Liberty Modern Streetcar is scheduled for delivery in April.

As part of a $9.4m agreement signed in March 2013, DART also holds an option for two additional Liberty Modern Streetcars.
