Alstom has delivered its first Citadis tram to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after a 20-day journey from its La Rochelle factory in France.
Four more Citadis trams are being produced at the company’s La Rochelle facility.

The trams are part of a €230m order awarded by the VLT Carioca consortium in 2013 to Alstom for the delivery of 32 trams as part of an integrated catenary-free tramway system.
The VLT Carioca consortium comprises Companhia de Concessoes Rodoviarias (CCR), Odebrecht Transport (OTP), Invepar, Riopar, BRT and RATP Dev.
Of the total order, 27 other trams will be produced at Alstom’s recently opened Taubaté facility in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In addition to the integrated tramway system, Alstom is supplying the power supply, signalling and telecommunication systems.

By GlobalDataIn order enable catenary-free operation along the whole route, Alstom’s APS ground-level power supply will be installed.
The 44m-long trams will also be equipped with supercapacitors to store energy regenerated during braking.
The first 14km section of the line is expected to be opened in mid next year in time for the 2016 Olympic Games and when fully complete, the line will be 28km-long with 37 stations.
