French transport group Alstom and the Shanghai Alstom Transport Electrical Equipment (Satee) joint venture (JV) will supply traction equipment for 160 trains for phase three of Beijing’s metro line 6 in China.
The supplies will be undertaken as part of a €27m contract.

The rolling stock will use Alstom’s Optonix traction equipment designed for the Chinese market.
Optonix uses electrical braking and features a lightweight and compact design, and has also been ordered for Shanghai, Nanjing, Qingdao, Xi’an and Chengdu in China.
The JV will supply the propulsion inverter, auxiliary converter, brake resistor, master controller, gearbox and coupling. Other major components such as high-circuit breakers and traction control will also be provided by the company.
The traction motors will be produced locally by Alstom’s Xayeeco joint venture in Xi’an, while the system will be tested at Satee’s facility in Shanghai.

Phase three of the metro is expected to enter into commercial service by the end of 2018.
The city’s second east-west metro line, Beijing’s metro line 6 is is expected to enter into commercial service by the end of 2018.
It runs in parallel to line 1 and is an important transportation artery aiming to reduce the traffic pressure on line 1 and east-west road traffic.
When completed, the 9km line 6 is expected to carry one million passengers every day.
Last January, the JV won two contracts worth €75m to supply new traction system for more than 550 metro cars on Chengdu metro lines 3 and 4 and Xi’an metro line 3.
Alstom has currently provided traction equipment to 692 metro cars for phases one and two of line 6 and line 15, as well as signalling systems to Beijing Airport Link, line 2, line 6, line 9, Fangshan line and line 1.
