Ansaldo STS (ASTS) has secured a $31.5m contract from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) in the US, to design, furnish, test and commission a signalling and train control (S&TC) system for its West Side Subway Extension.

The extension will be around 3.9 miles from its existing terminus at Wilshire/Western Station to a new Wilshire/La Cienega station, and include a total of three new stations.

The new S&TC system will be designed to provide safe and efficient movement of trains along the extensions’ mainline and interlocked tracks.

According to the company, the system will meet these requirements through the implementation of automatic train protection (ATP) functions, and support of automatic train operation (ATO) and automatic train supervision (ATS) functions.

In addition, the new system will employ train-to-wayside communications (TWC).

Scheduled to be opened in 2023, the $2.8bn first phase will extend the Purple Line west from Wilshire/Western to La Cienega Boulevard, with two stations.

A joint venture of Skanska, Traylor and Shea has already started construction of the underground route in this project in 2014.

It is reported that two further phases would extend the route by a total of 5.5 miles to Westwood by 2035.
