Canadian equipment manufacturing company Bombardier Transportation has received a $67m contract to deliver 12 Flexity dual-voltage tram trains to the city of Karlsruhe in Germany.

The contract was awarded by Karlsruhe-owned operator of rail and bus services Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG).

Bombardier Transportation’s light rail vehicles and services locomotives president Michael Fohrer said: "The world-famous Karlsruhe model ideally links the city with the surrounding region and our Flexity tram trains have been customised to perfectly fulfill this requirement.

The three-section light rail vehicles are 37m long, 2.65m wide and can accommodate a total of 244 passengers.

They feature access areas that facilitate passenger flow and provide easy access for both travellers with limited mobility or those travelling with prams, bikes, or heavy luggage.

AVG’s chief technical officer Ascan Egerer said: "Placing an order for twelve new vehicles offers several advantages for AVG and its passengers. These new tram-trains offer barrier-free access.
