Managed by VicTrack, the upgrades also include installation of automatic gates at four pedestrian crossings, with two in Broadford and two in Donnybrook.

Victorian Government Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said: “We’re upgrading these road and pedestrian crossings to improve safety for motorists, passengers and local communities in central Victoria.

Emergency exit gates with electromagnetic latches will also be installed in order to allow people to get off the tracks if they get caught between the automatic gates when they close.

The programme aims to upgrade 52 road and 25 pedestrian crossings around Victoria.

Separately, Australia’s Andrews Labor Government has started construction work to remove two dangerous and congested level crossings and rebuild Bayswater train station.
