The Victoria Government has awarded a A$2bn ($1.4bn) contract to Evolution Rail consortium to deliver and maintain 65 new high-capacity trains for Australia’s High-Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT) project.

The consortium comprises Plenary Group, Downer Group and CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles.

The 35-year contract also includes development of new maintenance facilities in Pakenham East and Calder Park.

The first of the new trains, which will enhance the capacity of the Cranbourne Pakenham line by 42%, are scheduled to enter service in mid-2019, while the entire order will be ready by 2026.

Alstom has received a €31m ($32.66m) contract for Shanghai Line 10, which is the first driverless metro line in Shanghai, China.

Under the contract, through its local joint venture companies Shanghai Alstom Transport Electrical Equipment and Alstom Yongji Electric Equipment, Alstom will manufacture and supply traction solutions and train control monitoring systems (TCMS) for 156 metro cars to be run on Phase 2 of the line, which will begin service in 2018.

Saudi Arabia has reached a new agreement with a consortium comprising two Saudi companies and 12 Spanish firms to complete works on the Haramain High-Speed Rail project. 

The consortium was originally awarded a contract for works on the €6.7bn ($7.1bn) project in 2011 for the line that runs between Mecca and Medina.

The latest extension agreement clears the way for completion of works on the high-speed rail project, which originally began construction in March 2009.
