The Government of Victoria is set to add 30 new Metro train services during peak hours every week to help enable Melbourne commuters reach their destination more quickly.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan noted that the service will be introduced as part of a new metropolitan timetable, which is set to come into effect on 27 August.

The revised timetable will include the introduction of new morning and evening peak services on the Craigieburn, Sunbury and Werribee lines.

Allan said: “We’re running more trains at peak hour, when extra services and more room are needed most.

“The new services will make a real difference by getting people to work quicker and home sooner.”

These services are expected to carry 27,000 extra passengers a week during the busiest times of the day.

The new timetable will extend 37 daily services that currently stop at Newport, as well as benefit passengers commuting on the Altona Loop.

It will also extend two peak services on the Hurstbridge line to provide more services to passengers in Rosanna, Macleod, Watsonia, Greensborough, Montmorency and Eltham.

The timetable represents the fourth update implemented by the government, which have so far added more than 300 extra metro services and nearly 600 new regional services.

The government has invested nearly $4bn in new vehicles, including 19 new X’Trapolis trains and 65 new high-capacity metro locomotives.

It is currently planning to start the construction of the Metro Tunnel, as well as remove several dangerous level crossings and install new signalling in order to run more trains.

The new train timetable will be available from July.
