The Malaysian Government-owned Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) has awarded the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) work package for the Light Rail Transit (LRT3) project to a consortium comprising CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive (CRRC ZELC), Siemens Limited China and Tegap Dinamik.

The contract is valued at roughly MYR1.56bn ($363m) and will involve the design, manufacture, supply, delivery, installation, testing and commissioning of 42 six-car LRVs for operation on the LRT3 project.

Prasarana Group chairman Tan Sri Ismail Adam said: “The LRT3 project is officially underway and this award shows that our construction is gaining momentum.

“With the three companies’ proven track record, experience and quality of delivery, I am confident that works will be completed within the time and cost.”

The LRV work package represents one of the largest systems work packages under the LRT3 project.

Five companies were qualified to participate in the tender process for the project, though the consortium of CRRC ZELC, Siemens Limited China and Tegap Dinamik was the only organisation to have submitted its bid when tenders closed in November.

CRRC chairman Liu Hualong said: “The formation of this consortium will provide the necessary experience and skill sets to ensure the smooth delivery of the works involved.

“We are looking forward to providing the Malaysian commuters with the delivery of superior LRVs that will ensure reliable performance and topmost quality.”

LRT3’s LRVs will be Malaysia’s first six-car driverless trains, which will be capable of carrying 1,271 passengers per vehicle.

The LRVs will have jerk limit controls, sound insulations and disability-friendly facilities to ensure comfortable journeys for passengers.

Prasarana noted that the LRVs’ air-conditioning systems will be ozone-friendly and the trains are to be equipped with asbestos-free friction brakes.

The 37km LRT3 project is set to run from Bandar Utama to Klang, and is currently expected to be completed in 2020.

The project will provide easy transport alternatives to nearly 74,000 commuters daily throughout the Klang, Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya areas.
