British and French joint venture Mott MacDonald and Systra has been selected as a design partner by Balfour Beatty and Vinci for the UK’s High-Speed 2 (HS2) rail project.

French engineering and consulting group Systra was involved in every high-speed rail line in France and 50% worldwide. In the UK, Systra worked on Crossrail and the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme, as well as being a member of Rail Link Engineering, which was the organisation responsible for the design and engineering of High-Speed 1 (HS1).

British engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald has been involved in HS2 for more than six years, providing a broad range of planning, engineering and environmental services.

The joint venture (JV) is bidding for phase one of civil works on the rail project.

"Work on the first stage of HS2 has been split into three packages covering northern, central and southern sections of the route."

In March, Balfour Beatty VINCI JV was shortlisted for four civil engineering packages of work for HS2, worth a combined total of £3.3bn-£5.4bn.

The packages include Lot N1, the Long Itchington Wood Green Tunnel to Delta Junction/Birmingham Spur; Lot N2, the Delta Junction to West Coast Main Line Tie-in; Lot C1, the Chiltern Tunnels and Colne Valley Viaduct; and Lot C2, the North Portal Chiltern Tunnels to Brackley.

Last December, the JV was also shortlisted as one of the contractors running for shares of the HS2’s £900m preparatory works and was invited to tender in March this year.

Work on the first stage of HS2 has been split into three packages covering northern, central and southern sections of the route. This is expected to start on schedule in 2017.
