Western Australia’s EPA recommends approval for $2bn Perth airport rail link

Western Australia’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) recommended the $A2.2bn ($2bn) project for conditional approval, which will start construction of the Forrestfield Airport Link that will extend Perth’s rail network.

The public transport authority’s Perth airport link project involves the construction of three stations at Airport West, Consolidated Airport and Forrestfield.

The project also involves an 8km-long, twin-rail tunnel that will run to the airport from the existing line at Bayswater and end at Forrestfield.

Wabtec to acquire France’s Faiveley Transport for $1.8bn

US-based Wabtec confirmed its plans to acquire French rail products firm Faiveley Transport for a total purchase price of $1.8bn, including assumed debt.

Bechtel consortium begins tunnelling work on Riyadh Metro Line 1

US-based Bechtel-led consortium BACS started tunnelling work on Line 1 of the $23bn Riyadh Metro project in Saudi Arabia.

The consortium, which includes Almabani General Contractors, Consolidated Contractors Company, and Siemens (BACS), is responsible for the $10bn contract for the design, construction, signalling, electrification, and integration of the Lines 1 and 2 of the metro, as well as the provision of rail cars.

Scope of work under the contract includes the construction of 39 stations, two of which are key interchange stations at Olaya district in the centre of the city and in the new King Abdullah Financial District.

Philippine’s DOTC begins bidding for $3.77bn North-South railway project

The Filipino Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Philippine National Railway (PNR) started bidding for the PHP170.7bn ($3.77bn) South Line of the North-South Rail Project (NSRP), dubbed as the government’s most expensive public-private partnership (PPP) project to date.

The project will involve modernisation of the oldest rail system in South-East Asia, beginning with the Manila-Legaspi section including additional branch lines totalling 653km.

DOTC secretary Jun Abaya said: "Rail systems are a driver for inclusive socioeconomic growth. They encourage trade and business activity, and provide access to employment and educational opportunities."

Siemens-Huawei consortium wins GSM-R upgrade contract from German Railways

German Railways selected a consortium of Siemens Convergence Creators and Huawei to perform a migration of its first-generation GSM-R network in northern Germany.

The project involves a total length of 12,000km of the German railway network, which represents 40% of the operative network of German Railways.

The new network is compliant with EIRENE GSM-R and ETCS2/ERTMS standards, seamless interoperability, new GSM-R functions, and the contract includes the option to expand the network to mobile broadband services, including 4G long-term evolution (LTE).

Sener wins California High Speed Line engineering contract

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) in the US awarded a contract to Spain-based Sener for the development of engineering and environmental services for the 42-mile (72.4km) section between Palmdale and Burbank Airport.

The section is the first phase of California’s high-speed line (HSL).

Under the deal, Sener will carry out preliminary design for the HSL section, including conceptual design engineering, through a process that will involve analysing various alternatives before selecting the preferred option.

Luton Airport reveals plans for new direct rail service

The UK’s London Luton Airport reportedly revealed plans to build a new direct railway line to reduce the journey time from central London to the airport to 20min.

The new rail link, which would connect directly to the Midlands mainline, is part of the airport’s £100m redevelopment project that would increase its passenger capacity by 50%, as well as improve the customer experience.

Passengers currently take a 20min direct train from St Pancras International to Luton airport Parkway station but with waiting times and stops along the way, journey time to the airport can be more than doubled.

NSW proposes underground pedestrian link for Sydney Metro Northwest

Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) Government proposed to build a new underground pedestrian link as part of the future Norwest Railway Station to the Norwest retail and business space.

The new underground link will take pedestrians below Norwest Boulevard, as well as provide a faster and easier link from the new railway station to established commercial space.

NSW minister for transport and infrastructure Andrew Constance said: "The A$8.3bn ($6.1bn) Sydney Metro Northwest, formerly known as the North West Rail Link, is the first stage of Sydney Metro, Australia’s biggest public transport project."

HCC-Coastal JV wins $123m construction contract from Northeast Frontier Railway

A joint venture comprising Coastal Projects and Indian infrastructure construction firm HCC secured an Rs7.85bn ($123m) contract from Northeast Frontier Railway to develop a 9.5km tunnel for the new railway line between Tupul and Impha, India.

HCC holds a 60% share in the joint venture, which is Rs4.71bn ($74m) of the project and scheduled to be completed in 40 months.

The firm noted that this is its fourth successive order from Northeast Frontier Railway on the new railway line between Jiribam and Tupul.

EIB provides €340m loan for Rhine-Ruhr Express project in Germany

The European Investment Bank (EIB) announced plans to offer a €340m long-term loan to help fund the Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) project in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The loan will be used to buy 82 new double-deck electric trains offering improved energy-efficiency and capacity, as well as special barrier-free passenger comfort for the RRX project.

RRX is promoted by the four neighbouring transport associations, namely VRR, NWL, NVR and SPNV Nord.
