RAIL CONSTRUCTION SERVICES

L&T offers a range of services, including construction of railway sidings and yards, bridges (steel and concrete), tunnels, rail-based urban transit systems (metro systems) and stations (including underground stations); railway electrification; signal and telecommunication systems (including RRI and electronic interlocking); integrated / composite railway projects; railway track-laying; industrial infrastructure for manufacturing critical railway assets; and closed-loop rail transportation systems (merry-go-round systems) for comprehensive and cost-effective bulk material movement of industry infrastructure, etc.

RAILWAY DESIGN, ENGINEERING, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

In addition L&T provides services in the areas of design and engineering of railway infrastructure, as well as catering for the operation and maintenance of railway assets.

ROLLING STOCK DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING

L&T is geared to undertake the design and manufacture of rolling stock, including locomotives, intercity coaches, metro coaches, wagons, etc.

EXPERIENCED RAIL SECTOR PROFESSIONALS

L&T has established a core team of railway professionals with extensive experience of various activities in the rail sector, including design and project engineering, infrastructure project implementation, project integration and management, manufacturing of railway assets, and operation and maintenance of railway systems. These professionals have in-depth knowledge about the nuances of the rail sector and excellent contacts worldwide.

SIDINGS AND YARDS CONSTRUCTION

L&T constructed the railway siding and yards for the Hirmi cement plant (Ultratech), the Grasim cement plant at Rawan in Madhya Pradesh, and rail connections and yards for cement plants from Hathband station.

RAIL BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

Our Indian rail bridges include Yamuna Bridge (for the Delhi metro), and Halladi Bridge and Panval Nadi Viaduct (the Konkan Railway).

Other L&T bridges include those across the Gambhir Khad and Jhajjar Khad. Jhajjar Khad Bridge is Asia's tallest railway bridge, with a maximum pier height of 88m and the longest bridge span (154m) on the Jammu-Udhampur rail link of the Northern Railway.

UNDERGROUND SYSTEM TUNNELS

L&T has constructed many tunnels for underground metro systems, including from Kashmere Gate to Central Secretariat for the Delhi Metro, where we used a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) of 6.25m in diameter to create a completed tunnel of 5.7m diameter). The tunnel is 8km long and was completed using TBM, cut-and-cover and NATM techniques. The project was completed eight months ahead of schedule.

STATIONS, TERMINALS AND BUILDINGS

L&T undertook the construction of the underground railway stations at Rajiv Chowk, Chawri Bazaar and Mandi House – as well as a workshop-cum-maintenance depot at Najafgarh, New Delhi – for the Delhi Metro.

RAIL ELECTRIFICATION

More than 6,000km of Indian railway track has been electrified by L&T, including the Jhansi-Bina section of the North Central Railway, the Kota-Nagda Section of the West Central Railway and the Egmore-Tambaram Metro Line in Chennai. We have also commissioned about 20 track sub-stations and over 200 switching stations

SIGNAL AND TELECOMMUNICATION (S&T) SYSTEMS

L&T has executed many turnkey S&T projects for the Indian railway system, including panel interlocking and route relay interlocking stations and OFC-based communication systems for the Western, Central and South-Eastern Railways and Rail Vikas Nigam.

TRACK LAYING AND ROUTE UPGRADING

Our Indian railway route upgrading projects include the Panvel-JNPT doubling, and adding a third track for the Tiruvallur-Arakkonam line.

The JNPT project involved track laying; track linking; supply of ballast, sleepers, rails, points and crossings; overhead electrification works; construction of switching stations; signalling works including circuit design and commissioning of PI and RRI stations; a digital axle counter; a DC track circuit; AFTC; etc.
