Stadler has received an order to deliver eight additional double-decker electric multiple units (EMUs) to Swedish firm AB Transitio.

It follows the original contract that was signed between the two companies in 2016, which covered the delivery of 33 EMUs with an option for 110 additional units.

The new trains are set to be used by Uppsala Länstrafik in Sweden and are claimed to be well-suited to serve commuter and regional traffic around the city.

The new-generation double-decker trains have been specially designed to operate in the cold weather conditions of Scandinavia and exhibit an open, fluid architectural design.

Aluminium has been used in the design of the car bodies, which is expected to facilitate a reduction in operating costs and the overall amount of energy required for operation.

The EMUs are also equipped with dry transformers that do not require oil as a coolant.

The passenger flow in the entrance area of the vehicles has also been optimised.

Stadler’s vehicles are equipped with a variety of winter weather features, including closed engine rooms, double-wall inter-car gangways, snow scrapers between the bogies and carriage bodies, and a heat recovery system, in addition to floor heating and insulation systems.

Stadler plans to involve Swedish suppliers such as Icomera, Kockum Sonics, ÅF-Infrastructure and Hök Instrument in works related to the latest order.

Stadler also previously announced the acquisition of Knorr-Bremse subsidiary Swedtrac last month.

Swedtrec primarily focuses on train modernisation works.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen Stadler’s presence in the Nordic region, particularly Sweden.

All 106 Swedtrac employees are expected to be absorbed into Stadler following the completion of the acquisition.
